Challenge coins are traditionally given out to prove membership when
challenged, to enhance morale, and to be collected. In practice,
challenge coins are normally presented in recognition of special
achievements and exchanged in recognition of visits to an
organization.
In the Air Force, military training instructors award an Airman's
coin to new enlisted personnel upon completion of their Basic
Military Training and to new officers upon completion of Air Force
Officer Training School. In addition, many career fields and
hundreds of units and organizations have their own coins. Challenge
coins are deeply embedded in US military tradition.
AFPAA has continued that tradition with its own challenge coin,
designed to illustrate its commitment to the Air Force public
affairs career field.
